Responding to the Government’s Skills for Jobs White Paper published today, Joe Fitzsimons, Senior Policy Advisor at the IoD, said:
“Directors will welcome the move toward a more employer-led training system. Skills gaps have long been a leading concern for businesses, and the pandemic has only amplified the need to develop a more agile skills and training landscape.
“The white paper’s emphasis on boosting technical skills will be important as businesses and individuals attempt to adapt to change. However, it is important that core skills around management and leadership are also not forgotten, as they are a key driver of productivity. Lifelong learning loans are also a step forward, particularly for the self-employed and entrepreneurs looking to reskill, but many will remain apprehensive about taking on additional debt at this time.
“It is crucial the government builds on these announcements with continued engagement to ensure they are shaped with the interests of the business community and individuals in mind.”
